VIZARD II, A PCI-Card for Real-Time Volume Rendering
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper we present a second generation VIZARD system being capable of rendering 256 datasets at interactive frame-rates providing high image quality. In contrast to the previous VIZARD system, we use dedicated memory to store the dataset on the PCI card. Lossy and redundant compression of the dataset has been eliminated. Interactive change of shading and classi cation parameters is enabled by moving shading and classi cation from pre-processing into the pipeline. Memory bandwidth requirements are reduced by using a table of pre-calculated gradients. Thus, the gradient at sample location requires an eight neighborhood of voxels instead of a 32 neighborhood. We describe the generation of the discrete gradients and the impact on image quality. Furthermore, we present a parameterization of the ray in order to remove work-load from the pipeline. Finally, we propose a PCI card serving as a platform for our second generation VIZARD. The proposed PCI card uses programmable devices to enable the implementation of other hardware accelerators as well. Translucent and Opaque Direct Volume Rendering for Virtual Endoscopy Applications (ST)
Virtual endoscopy applications frequently require the visual representation of several material interfaces to show the relevant data feature to the user. This requires the specification of complex transfer function which classify the various materials and color them appropriately. In this paper, we explore the use of the direct volume rendering for virtual endoscopy. We specifically look into t...

In this paper we present a volume rendering system that implements a Direct Volume Rendering algorithm on a Xilinx FPGA being capable of visualizing 3D-datasets with highest image quality at interactive frame rate. The volume renderer utilizes a cache optimized memory scheme for maximum memory bandwidth and a fully pipelined architecture of the computational expensive rendering calculations. Th...
متن کاملEfficient Space Leaping for Raycasting Architectures
One of the most severe problems for ray casting architectures is the waste of computation cycles and I/O bandwidth, due to redundant sampling of empty space. While several techniques exist for software implementations to skip these empty regions, few are suitable for hardware implementation. The few which have been presented either require a tremendous amount of logic or are not feasible for hi...
متن کاملMulti-processor iso-surface volume rendering
Volume rendering is used to visualize volumetric data. The rendering process should be sufficiently fast to obtain a smooth interaction with the user. Interactive volume rendering is currently only possible on high speed and very expensive super computers. It is the goal of the research currently being conducted at the University of Twente to bring interactive volume rendering in reach of more ...
متن کاملBinary Composition Tree Hardware: A Scalable Solution for Real-Time Volume Rendering
Recent advances in PC graphics hardware like the VolumePro 500-2X and GeForce 3 have resulted in remarkable volume rendering performance. However, the limited amount of video memory found on a single card prohibits its use in large-scale volume graphics applications. The trend has thus been to make use of the combined rendering power and storage capacity of multiple graphics cards to achieve in...
